What Is Webflow and How Does It Work?

Webflow is a no-code website builder that doubles as a CMS, collaborative workspace, and project management tool for professional web designers. Launched in 2013, Webflow has since evolved into one of the most advanced website builders on the market, and currently has over 400 employees and 3.5 million users.

One of the reasons Webflow is so popular is that it caters to freelancers, web design agencies, and other professionals in the field. It offers easy-to-use tools for staging website projects, handing them over to clients, or collaborating remotely in real time.

However, as our Webflow review for 2022 will show, there’s so much more to this online platform.

At the same time, Webflow offers a sizable library of professionally designed templates and one of the most powerful website editors. If that’s not enough, a whole community and economy have sprung up around it, due to its marketplaces for Webflow Experts as well as user-made components and templates.

Main Features

We’re not exaggerating when we say Webflow has something to offer everyone. One of its key strengths is that the online platform is set up in a way that lets you take full advantage of the features most important to you.

With that in mind, here are the top features we identified as part of our Webflow review in 2022:

Web Design

You’ll spend most of your time designing your website using the Webflow drag-and-drop, WYSIWYG website designer tool, which isn’t the typical pared-down page builder we’ve learned to expect from website builder platforms. It’s a pixel-perfect design tool that’s every bit as powerful as the best WordPress page builders like Elementor, Divi, etc.

The builder is fully interactive—you can drag and drop elements onto the canvas to add them to your page or move them around, delete, duplicate, or replace them on the spot. You can even change the content of text elements simply by double-clicking and typing.

As we continued to explore throughout our review of Webflow, we discovered each element has surprisingly deep settings to alter the design, interactivity, and content. For example, adjusting the margins/border/padding, changing the color, adding animations or effects, styling the typography, and more.

You can even add custom code using HTML, JavaScript, or CSS right in the editor.

While designing, you can switch between the desktop, tablet, and mobile phone views to make sure your design is responsive everywhere. The designer even has an audit tool to scan for any potential issues, while the collaboration tools make it easy to work on your designs in a team setting.

Motion Design

This is a feature we were pleasantly surprised to learn about in our review on Webflow. Motion design is a web design style that makes extensive use of animations as a key aspect of the site’s design.

This feature lets you create a variety of scroll-based animations, for example, such as parallax effects, progress bars, as well as build-up and reveal animations with relative ease. You can also make your website feel more interactive thanks to cursor-based micro-interactions, hover animations, complex multi-step animations, or modal/slide-out panels.

If you do a Webflow vs Wix review, this kind of design customization freedom is what separates Webflow from Wix and most other competitors.

Even so, we were surprised to see the extent of its motion design options. First of all, the no-code, visual animation and interaction tools make it easy to create complex and advanced motion designs without any technical expertise. Behind the scenes, Webflow implements your animations and interactive elements using CSS and JavaScript.

Although many of these animations are built-in effects, you can further customize them using the UI or custom code by setting specific events or triggers that fire or stop animations as well as control their behavior, for example. You can even integrate After Effects and Lottie animations.

Content Management System (CMS)

If you want to start a content-based site, you’ll want to pay attention to this area of our honest Webflow review. In its own words, Webflow wanted to make it easy for designers, editors, web developers, and content strategists to manage and collaborate on content across the website.

First of all, you can import various types of content in different formats, such as CSV, APIs, or manually. Content strategists can even create their own content types and use dynamic content tools to reuse the content in interesting ways, such as to personalize experiences.

You can also supercharge your content through features like the Webflow review widget.

Designers can design the page live around the existing content, and editors can alter the text right within the web building tools. Web developers, on the other hand, can add, delete, update, or publish content using the REST API.

It’s even possible to invite clients or team members to edit the content of specific website elements, and edits made by anyone will instantly sync and reflect across the entire website.

Webflow is a very developer-friendly website builder—it allows web developers to create their own web components using the Webflow design tools. For example, you can create a navigation bar or your own Webflow review widget.

These components can then be reused throughout your website project by creating Symbols of them. If you make any change to the original component, all instances of the component across the website will be updated.

You can even find examples of component-based website templates and elements built with and for Webflow, and reuse this user-generated content in your own projects if it has handy frameworks or prototypes.

Webflow also allows you to integrate components built using certain other frameworks, such as React.

One of the best features of using the Webflow ecosystem is the growing and dynamic community. Webflow’s user showcase is one of the best sources to get new website design ideas and learn about the capabilities of the Webflow platform. While often overlooked, you definitely have to factor this in when asking yourself “is Webflow worth it?”

Many of the published showcase sets even let you clone or customize them to use instead of Webflow templates, as a style guide, or as a framework to build a specific type of website.

Website Management

Webflow has different types of account plans that allow you to create and publish a different number of websites. However, you need one of its “Workspace” plans if you want to collaborate and let others manage the websites in your Webflow portfolio.

As this is an honest Webflow review, we have to point out that even though we enjoyed using it, it’s not as beginner-friendly as Squarespace or Weebly.

However, the dashboard provides some simple yet effective capabilities to manage your website projects—you can filter, sort, and search websites as well as organize them in different folders.

Websites can also be exported and imported across Webflow accounts (including the underlying code), which is particularly useful within companies or when working with clients. Other useful tools for professional web designers include the ability to stage websites or password-protect them so only certain users have access.

According to Webflow reviews in 2022, this is another highlight of the platform. In practice, Webflow offers several ways to create a multilingual site.

The first is to simply create copies of your website in different languages and host them on the same account. However, this is a time-consuming process, and you’ll need to update them all individually if you change anything. You also have to think about your plan limits.

Alternatively, you could also use the CMS and dynamic content tools to replace the original text with translations dynamically, but this is also technically complex and time-consuming.

The best solution that many Webflow reviews recommend seems to be using the Weglot integration that will automatically translate your web pages’ content and create multiple versions of your website on multi-language subdomains. You can then go and edit the translated text to make sure it’s accurate and correct.

When you update the content, you can sync those changes to all your other multilingual pages. Weglot also adds a multi-language switcher to the front end of your website so you or your visitors can swap the language used live.

Custom Branding

Now, we finally get to some of the reasons in our Webflow hosting review why it’s such a great choice for professionals.

By default, a “Made in Webflow” tag will be displayed on all your website pages, and if you’re on the free Starter plan, you have to host your website on a Webflow.io subdomain. However, with a paid plan, you can remove the “Made in Webflow” branding and connect your site to a custom domain.

If you work as a freelance web designer or web design agency, Webflow lets you white label the entire CMS. You can replace the Webflow logos and branding within the dashboard as well as the page editor, and share your projects with clients without any Webflow branding.

This is great, for example, when you want clients to conduct a Webflow websites review so you can work on their feedback.

With Webflow, it’s possible to extend your website features and capabilities by installing third-party plugins and integrations created specifically for Webflow that can add new or enhance existing functionalities, such as ecommerce, CMS, social media integration, email marketing, etc.

Integrations include some highly popular names that are considered the best platforms at what they do, such as Shopify, MailChimp, Intercom, SoundCloud, Zapier, and Google Analytics. Zapier itself can give you access to thousands of other business plugins and integrations, making your site possibilities nearly endless.

If you do a Webflow ecommerce review, you’ll find integrations are really important, as its standard ecommerce tools are fairly basic.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

In terms of SEO, Webflow provides incredibly fine-grained control over the SEO of your website. The best part is that much of your on-page SEO can be handled from right in the Website Editor using a visual interface.

This allows SEO experts on your team to easily conduct a Webflow websites review to see if the SEO is on point even without any design or development experience.

For example, you can create important SEO metadata such as the page title and meta description right in the editor, which will give you a preview of what your page listing will look like in Google SERPs. Image Alt tags can also be changed right in the editor.

Webflow will automatically generate a sitemap for your site at the click of a button, and on a more technical level, it will even let you edit the underlying Schema markup.

This is really just the tip of the iceberg considering all the other marketing tools you have at your disposal, not to mention the solid hosting and website structure that help sites hosted with Webflow perform better and increase their chances for better rankings.

As it’s another important reason why users choose website builders like Webflow, let’s do a quick Webflow hosting review.

Like most website builders, Webflow promises simplicity by offering an all-in-one web creation and hosting platform. As with any proper hosting service, you can expect all the basics, such as the ability to add a custom domain, bandwidth, storage, etc.

Your allowances depend on your plan, but range between the following:

  • Bandwidth: 1 to 400 GB
  • Storage: Unlimited
  • Monthly visits: 1,000 to 250,000
  • CDN: Regional to Global
  • Static pages: 2 for Starter users, 100 for everyone else
  • CMS items: 50–10,000 (20–40 collections)

All websites are delivered via Webflow’s global CDN with over 100 servers worldwide for improved performance, and Webflow allows creating an unlimited number of backups as well.

Ease of Use

Our review of Webflow wouldn’t be complete without taking a look at how easy it is to use the platform.

So, here’s a step-by-step breakdown:

9. If it’s your first site, Webflow will once again guide you through the most important steps:

The Editor should be pretty intuitive to anyone who’s used a similar web builder tool before, and it’s easy to see why it’s so highly praised in Webflow reviews. Although it can be a little overwhelming if you’re completely new, you should quickly get the hang of it, especially if you follow the Getting started guide.

Once you’re done designing your website, click the “Publish” button in the top-right corner:

In the top-left corner, you can access your project settings or go back to your dashboard:

Webflow managing projects

As you can see, the dashboard offers a pretty simple and intuitive visual interface for managing all your Webflow projects:

This is where you can organize, create, delete, or manage all your projects. And these are the most important things you need to know about how to use Webflow!

Although it’s a pretty powerful website builder, Webflow somehow managed to make the user experience fun and straightforward. Throughout our review on Webflow, we found the various guides and tutorials extremely helpful for familiarizing yourself with every aspect of the platform.

Next, let’s look at the cost to use Webflow:

Price per month Basic CMS Business
Annual billing $14 $23 $39
Monthly billing $18 $29 $49

The higher-priced site plans have higher storage, bandwidth, guest editors, and monthly visitor limits, while the number of items, transaction fees, and annual sales volume differs from ecommerce to ecommerce plan.

Depending on how you plan to use Webflow, the pricing is relatively straightforward, and the above plans make it easy to decide is Webflow worth it. The plans are mostly for normal use cases, where a single user hosts a single website.

However, if you want to work in a team, you’ll probably want a Workspace plan that allows you to add multiple user accounts as well as create more projects to collaborate on. Workspace plans range from $19/month to $49/month, with customized Enterprise plans available.

However, this doesn’t cover your hosting, so you’ll need to purchase site hosting plans depending on the type of hosting you need for each website you want to host live.

Customer Support

Webflow only offers one-on-one technical support via email Monday–Friday. However, you can also look for help using the community forum or by hiring an independent Webflow expert. At 2.7/5 stars on Trustpilot, customer Webflow reviews in 2022 are somewhat mixed—while most love the actual platform, many feel adequate support is lacking.

Now, let’s see how Webflow compares to alternatives on the market:

Alternative Win Lose Best for

Webflow has more attractive and creative templates than Weebly. Weebly is generally more affordable, with unlimited bandwidth and storage. Those who are new to using website builders.
Webflow vs Wix review

Check out our full review of Wix.

Webflow’s page Editor is far superior to that of Wix and not all Wix themes are mobile responsive. Wix offers more advanced ecommerce than Webflow. Those looking to build an ecommerce site with a website builder.

There are a number of areas in which Webflow outshines the competition:

  • A massive library of beautifully designed templates
  • One of the most powerful and flexible website editors
  • Collaboration and white labeling tools for teams

However, there are also some reasons why you might consider another website builder:

  • More tools and design customization freedom means more time needed to master Webflow
  • Somewhat basic ecommerce capabilities

Still, if you’re a professional web design freelancer or agency, Webflow is easily one of the best platforms on the market.

Webflow Review: Conclusion

For the vast majority of users, Webflow offers the perfect balance between a no-code, user-friendly experience while still exercising significant control over everything from the design to content to the SEO of your site. In addition, professional web developers and designers will appreciate the web design tools that improve the web design process and boost productivity.

Webflow gives anyone—from hobbyists to professional design agencies—the freedom to create the website of their dreams.

Is Webflow good for SEO?
