Overall, Clover is an incredibly feature-rich and versatile PoS provider that supports both retail and restaurant businesses, although it caters mostly to the latter. So, the first thing we’ll look at in this Clover PoS review is what features it has to offer.

Track Revenue

For consumer-facing businesses, especially those in retail or food service, it’s incredibly important to stay on top of your transactions on a day-to-day basis. This is why one of Clover’s key features are its powerful analytics and point-of-sale tracking tools.

So far, we’ve only looked at how to use Clover PoS for in-house payment processing. However, the virtual terminal allows you to accept and process payments even if you don’t have a physical Clover device handy.

Basically, how it works is—you log into your Clover Web Dashboard and request a payment from a customer by email. The customer can complete the payment using their credit/debit card, and you’ll be notified instantly.

So, you only need an internet-connected device to accept payments on behalf of your business anytime, anywhere.

QuickBooks and Yelp Sync

QuickBooks and Yelp are highly popular tools for all businesses today. QuickBooks is a user-friendly accounting and finance management tool, while Yelp is one of the most widely used review sites.

Clover allows you to integrate Yelp with your booking system. For example, the Booker app lets potential customers make booking right from your Yelp page, encouraging more feedback or Yelp reviews. This level of integration is one of the key differences between Clover and Square PoS.

You can also configure Clover to automatically sync all transactions to QuickBooks for accounting purposes. Without any manual input, the two can create the necessary Invoices and payment receipts along paper trails for Items, Tax, Discounts, Tips, and Charges.

Of course, businesses like restaurants and bars have special considerations to make when it comes to doing business in-store, and the good news is that Clover is also PoS system for full-service restaurants.

The software has plenty of useful features, such as a table mapping interface, built-in menu systems, customizable orders, split bills, and synchronization between the front and back of the house.

The restaurant system can also integrate with online ordering as well as delivery/pick-up services like Grubhub. Of course, you get the same other PoS capabilities, such as a virtual terminal, offline payment processing, employee management, and more.

Built-in CRM

One feature we found particularly interesting in our Clover PoS system review were its CRM capabilities.

Clover ships with a built-in CRM for small businesses. This feature allows you to manage customer relationships by identifying your most loyal customers, understand what your customers buy and how, create promotions and notify customers, run loyalty or reward programs, or solicit customer feedback.

Clover gives you a handy account profile for each customer, with a snapshot of their information and behaviors. Although it can’t compete with big-name enterprise CRM systems, the system is easy to use and capable enough for small-to-medium businesses of all types.

For those who need an enterprise CRM, Clover does offer some integration options.

Barcode/Ticket Scanning

Finally, we get to another important part of our Clover PoS review: hardware. In its catalog of physical PoS devices, Clover offers a barcode/ticket scanning device that can scan both 1D and 2D barcodes from labels, phone screens, and high-density (HD) barcodes. The device is simple plug-and-play with other Clover systems, it’s omni-directional, and it can be used in either hands-free or handheld mode. However, it does cost $199 extra, which some might consider pricey.

Data Import/Export

Clover allows you to import/export customer data or inventory items using spreadsheets in CSV or Excel file formats. This is useful if you want to migrate to, from, or between Clover systems, as CSV and Excel files are basically universally compatible. It’s also useful if you use other third-party inventory management, CRM, or accounting tools that don’t directly integrate with Clover, or to share information throughout your organization.

Credit Card Management

Now, we get to one of the common Clover PoS complaints—the system doesn’t allow you to store your customers’ credit cards, so it can’t be used to process recurring payments or sell services that require recurring payments.

A big reason for this is that there’s so much extra red tape for staying compliant with credit card data protection regulations. Storing credit card information is also an extra risk for your business and customers. Still, it would be nice to have this capability, which some other PoS systems allow.

Online Ordering

Almost any business today needs an online revenue stream to be competitive and maximize profits. Clover enables you to sell across various online channels, such as search engines, apps, websites, etc.
