What Is Medical Guardian?

Medical Guardian (also referred to as “MG”) is a US-based company specializing in portable and non-portable medical alert systems. It was established in 2005 by Geoff Gross with headquarters in Philadelphia, PA.

Gross started MG after an unpleasant personal experience—his grandmother fell and was unable to contact anyone for help. Since 2005, Medical Guardian has received glowing consumer reviews and attracted more than 200,000 customers nationwide.

Medical Guardian Products and Services

MG’s products are targeted mainly towards senior citizens and are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. They are equipped with wireless connectivity and GPS technology and can also feature fall alerts (except the Freedom Guardian). The portable devices are all waterproof making it possible to request emergency services in case of any bath or shower-related incidents.

You can choose between a total of six Medical Guardian devices—four are portable and two are non-portable.

Portable Devices

According to Medical Guardian reviews, these devices are more popular than the non-portable ones because they stay alert and provide non-stop protection regardless of location. They are usually worn around the neck or on the wrist.

  • Mini Guardian

This is the newest addition to the Medical Guardian products. It boasts a smaller, sleeker, and more lightweight, waterproof design. It’s powered by a 4G LTE cellular network, has an unlimited range of medical alert coverage, and a GPS and Wi-Fi-powered tracking system.

  • Mobile Guardian

Also powered by GPS, the Mobile Guardian gives you the option to speak to an operator directly through your portable device. It’s also waterproof and offers 350 ft. range protection.

  • Active Guardian

The Active Guardian is MG’s all-in-one product. It relies on GPS and Wi-Fi technologies, comes equipped with fall-detection technology, and has the longest battery life out of all MG devices.

  • Freedom Guardian

Say hello to MG’s only smartwatch design that can also be connected to a companion app for optimal use. Apart from its GPS and Wi-Fi-powered location tracking, it offers additional features, such as reminders and alerts, weather forecasts, and text-to-speech messaging.

Non-Portable Devices

These devices aren’t as popular among customer reviews for Medical Guardian because of their limited portability. You can take them with you if you move or go on holiday, but you have to let MG’s customer service know about your new location.

  • Classic Guardian

This is MG’s most affordable option. It includes a base station connected to your landline and an emergency alert button you can wear as a pendant or a watch. The maximum allowed distance between the base station and the alert button is 1,300 ft.

  • Home Guardian

The Home Guardian works similarly to the Classic Guardian, but it’s connected wirelessly, not through a landline. It comes with a base station and a portable button with a maximum possible distance of 600 ft. between them.

A Stylish Protector: The Limitless Icons Collection

MG doesn’t want anyone to sacrifice their style for their safety, so they said, “Why not have both?” and created the Limitless Icons Collection.

It’s a line of pendants with a different-colored jewel in the center that also serves as a wearable medical alert button. The pendants come in four designs: Audrey (black onyx and gold), Farrah (pearl and gold), Tippi (black onyx and silver), and Dolly (turquoise and silver).

The reviews on the Medical Guardian pendants are overwhelmingly positive and praise their innovativeness and care for their customers’ needs.

The pendants are compatible with the Home and Mobile Medical Guardian devices.

How Does Medical Guardian Work?

We already mentioned that all MG devices’ purpose is to provide non-stop tracking and support in medical emergencies and non-emergencies.

Medical Emergencies

MG has a 24/7 monitoring center with call operators who are always prepared to respond to your alerts. They work in close collaboration with your local EMT providers and dispatch them in case of any medical emergency. You or your loved ones may not always have a phone on hand to call 9-1-1, but with MG’s emergency alert system, you will get emergency assistance by just pressing your medical alert button. The EMT will be briefed on your location, any medication you are taking, hospital preferences, and any conditions, optimizing their speed and efficiency.

Medical Non-emergencies

Although MG can be your lifeline in life-threatening situations, not many Medical Guardian reviews talk about their assistance with medical non-emergencies. If you need help, you can contact an MG operator through your device, and they will contact your family members, friends, or neighbors to help you in any situation.

Medical Guardian Plans and Pricing

Like most companies of this type, MG offers subscription-based services for their devices. Prices range from $29.95 to $79.95 per month. You can choose to pay annually if you want slightly lower costs, and there are also options to pay quarterly or semi-annually.

Most devices don’t have an equipment fee, as you’re technically renting rather than owning them. The two exceptions are the Mini and the Freedom Guardian that come with a one-time equipment cost (included in the table below).

For an additional fee, you can also include optional features into your plan, such as:

  • Fall detection
  • Jewellery pendant (remember the Limitless Icons collection?)
  • Protection plan (warranty)
  • Wall-mounted button (can also be voice-activated)

Here’s a detailed Medical Guardian cost review:

Device Monthly cost Monthly cost

(if paid annually)

Mini Guardian $39.95 $36.62 $124.95
Mobile Guardian $49.95 $45.45 $0.00

Medical Guardian Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • 24/7 emergency and non-emergency response
  • No cancellation fees
  • Nationwide coverage
  • Six device options

Cons:

  • No 24/7 customer service
  • No free trial period

Medical Guardian Alternatives

If MG didn’t impress you, here are some alternatives you might prefer:

  • Medical Guardian vs Bay Alarm

Both companies offer very similar services and device types (Bay Alarm doesn’t have a smartwatch device) with decent battery life, a two-way communication option, and 24/7 response. However, Bay Alarm’s advantage is its price range, which features lower prices than MG, ranging from $19.95 to $59.95.

  • Medical Guardian vs Life Alert

Like MG, this A+ BBB-rated company also offers both non-portable and portable emergency device options. Life Alert has an additional perk – there’s a discount for buying a second device for a spouse or roommate. Their other advantage is their experience—Life Alert has been on the market for 20(!) years, longer than MG.

Medical Guardian User Reviews

MG’s service holds up well according to their customers’ testimonies. There are some exceptions, though.

Consumer Affairs’ reviews for Medical Guardian tell a promising story. With an average score of 4.5 stars, customers share their positive experiences with MG’s devices’ speed and efficiency in emergencies. A lot of them state that they saved their life by providing them with urgent medical assistance.

These sentiments are also shared on Trustpilot, but they are joined by some less-than-great reviews by unsatisfied customers whose general complaints center around MG’s unsatisfactory customer service. It’s important to consider, however, that customer service is always a very divisive factor when it comes to reviews since it depends on an individual customer agent’s behavior and doesn’t necessarily reflect the company.

Privacy and Security Policy

Does Medical Guardian keep its customers’ data secure?

In their Privacy Statement, MG admits to collecting personally identifiable information about their users (full name, shipping/billing address, email address, telephone number, credit card information, or other payment information). According to them, your information will be used for “transactional, analytical, and marketing purposes” and shared with third parties in some cases.

As for security, they are dedicated to keeping all collected information safe through “electronic, administrative and physical measures.” If you’d like to have extra protection, consider the services of identity theft protection companies.

Wrap Up

With a solid range of devices at reasonable prices, as well as creative and helpful add-on options, Medical Guardian gives the impression of a professional and modern company that puts its customers’ needs first.
