Insider reports that President Biden is expected to announce a sweeping new plan to cancel $10,000 in student debt for every borrower as proposed during his campaign rally. This possibility was discussed by Nelnet, one of the largest student-loan and debt refinancing companies in the US, in the firm’s annual meeting last week. According to Jacque Mosely, the Director of Government Relations at Nelnet, the probability that President Biden will help federal borrowers is relatively high.
According to student debt statistics, the amount of student debt in the United States is about $1.6 trillion, which according to Nelnet’s CEO, Jeff Noordhoek, is an excessive sum. However, he also said that eliminating this debt wouldn’t solve the rising education expenses since students would continue to borrow after the fact. In addition to this, the firm’s chief financial officer, Jim Kruger, is afraid that granting students debt relief would reduce Nelnet’s future cash flow significantly.
Despite the protests from Republican lawmakers who claim that canceling student debt would cause inflation and cost taxpayers, it’s increasingly possible that some form of general relief will be offered in order to reduce the financial gap and help students with their repayment plans. President Joe Biden is getting close to a decision on student-loan forgiveness, and multiple reports have indicated that the relief will be near to his $10,000 debt-forgiveness campaign pledge and could possibly be targeted toward people with earnings below $125,000 a year.
