If you weren’t feeling old yet, we’re here to tell you that it’s been 20 whole years since the first Harry Potter movie came out. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone marked the beginning of a franchise that went on to become one of the most successful (and highest-grossing) ones of its time.
To mark the occasion, Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts has been announced. Before you get too excited, let us be clear about one thing – this won’t be a new Harry Potter movie.
This project is an HBO Max special that reunites some of the biggest stars and filmmakers involved in the making of the eight highly-successful movies of the franchise. Scroll down to see us discuss exactly what this project entails. But first, make sure to watch the trailer which just dropped.
Getting new content related to Harry Potter in 2022 is a welcome distraction from the chaos and existential dread surrounding us. So, here’s everything we know so far:
What Will the Anniversary Special Be About?
HBO Max describes the special as a “magical first-person journey through one of the most beloved film franchises.” Audiences will have a chance to see the most prominent cast (and crew) members reunite, reminisce, and discuss the impact Harry Potter has had on their career and lives overall during the past two decades.
As heard in the trailer, Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter himself) muses about his personal fear of living up to expectations after the franchise was finished: “The thing that scared me the most was the implication that the most meaningful thing in our life was done.” This gives us a small taste of the admissions which can be expected from the special.
Which Cast Members Are Returning?
A Harry Potter 2022 reunion couldn’t have happened without the involvement of the three main stars – Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Emma Watson (Hermione Granger), and Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) are seen in the trailer talking emotionally about growing up together.
Additionally, the special will bring back a nice chunk of the cast: Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix Lestrange), Robbie Coltrane (Rubeus Hagrid), Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldemort), Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy), Gary Oldman (Sirius Black), Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), James Phelps (Fred Weasley), Oliver Phelps (George Weasley), Mark Williams (Arthur Weasley), Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley), Alfred Enoch (Dean Thomas), Ian Hart (Professor Quirrell), Toby Jones (the voice actor for Dobby), Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom), and Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood).
An official poster with all the returning cast members appeared a few days before the trailer:
Another addition to the discussion will be given from the point of view of some people from behind the scenes of the production, namely, producer David Heyman and filmmakers Chris Columbus, Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Newell, and David Yates.
The reunion of the cast has definitely sparked nostalgia among the viewers and increased their interest in seeing Harry Potter in a new movie of the franchise together with the rest of the cast. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if this will be brought up in the special.
A Noticeable Absence – Where Is J.K. Rowling?
People were quick to notice a jarring absence of the franchise’s creator herself – Joanne Rowling. The absence of the writer is probably connected to her polarizing views on transsexuality which caused quite an uproar in 2020. Rowling’s controversial opinions caused her to lose the favor of a significant chunk of Harry Potter fans and the public in general.
When Will the Anniversary Special Be Available for Viewing?
The special will be available for streaming on HBO Max on New Year’s Day.
Is There Going to Be a New Harry Potter Movie?
The reunion of beloved cast members has sparked the discussion of the possibility of a new Harry Potter movie. We can’t blame the fans, as sequels, remakes, and prequels have been a very big trend in the past few years.
However, we’re sorry to disappoint that there have been no hints about a new Harry Potter movie happening anytime soon. Although, who knows what the future may hold?
