  • Tons of mystery running through the Holmes family.

Enola Holmes is one of Netflix’s new movies in the current year. It’s a mystery film directed by Harry Bradbeer, based on the first book in the young adult fiction series of the same name by Nancy Springer.

One morning, Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown), faced with the disappearance of her mother (Helena Bonham Carter), ends up in the care of her brothers Sherlock (Henry Cavill) and Mycroft (Sam Claflin). Both of them insist on sending her to a school for “proper” young ladies, which Enola dislikes. Unwilling to follow their rules, Enola escapes to London to find her mother. On her way, she meets the young runaway Viscount Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge), entangled in another mystery. Unraveling a conspiracy that threatens to set back the course of history. This is one of the awesome movies to watch.

Enola Holmes was intended to be a theatrical release by Warner Bros., but due to COVID-19, Netflix took over the distribution rights in April 2020. It was digitally released on September 23, 2020, but without any Warner Bros. involvement.

Set during the time of England’s expansion of voting rights being debated by the House of Lords. Enola Holmes links the stakes of democracy with the work of suffragists fighting for widespread representation. The film is something good to watch because it succeeds in balancing various broad themes

I Care a Lot is a dark comedy thriller film directed by J Blakeson. Involving a greedy business woman and a Russian gangster looking for mom, the movie’s fast pace is driven by spectacular performances. It’s been considered one of the amazing movies to watch this year.

For Marla (Rosamund Pike) and her business partner/lover, Fran (Eiza González), life is sweet, even more so when they find Jennifer Peterson (Dianne Wiest). Appointed by the court as a professional guardian for elderly people, Marla considers the retired, unmarried woman with no heirs a catch. However, Ms. Peterson is connected with crime leader Roman Lunyov (Peter Dinklage), who wants to break her free. What follows next is a battle of resources, wits, and wills between Marla, Roman, and their pawns.

Visit Website
  • The movie is tear jerking, so it’s best savored alone.
  • One of those good movies to stream, if you want to laugh and cry.
  • Divorce is more than just two people un-marrying.

Marriage Story is Noah Baumbach’s drama masterpiece that breaks down the divorce of Charlie (Adam Driver) and Nicole (Scarlett Johansson). As one of the top movies you should watch, it’s not just the tale of a marital breakdown; it shows the whole process of divorce: what it means, how it operates, and the real consequences. This is the first film set inside what might be called the divorce-industrial complex.

Reminiscing about his own divorce, Baumbach does not portray divorce as exclusively negative, even if it is ugly. It doesn’t try to justify an unhappy marriage, nor does it ask the audience to take sides. Marriage Story is definitely not an easy movie, but it’s not an emotional grind either, with moments of levity and love.

Depending on your life’s circumstances, it could be devastating to watch at times, so this is one of those movies to watch at home. It’s vulnerability is what makes the story worth watching, and we’re so glad that Baumbach decided to share it.

  • Just because something isn’t true love doesn’t mean it’s any less real
  • After Lara’s love letters are exposed, her love life becomes chaotic.
  • It’s a colorful, heartfelt, and charming high school rom-com.

Netflix has been killing the rom-com game this summer, and made a great profit on this represented market by releasing a steady stream of them weekly. The latest, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, is one of those cool and refreshing movies to watch.

Based on the 2014 novel, shy high school junior Lara Jean (Lana Condor) secretly writes letters to all of her crushes. However, one day all of the boys receive those letters, causing them to confront her one by one.

Lara is so likeable that she does not realize how well she is perceived; although she fantasizes of love, she is afraid to pursue any in real life. She is forced to deal with this when the love letters she wrote are “mysteriously” delivered to each of them.

Even though the plot is predictable, the movie is sweet and visually exciting, especially for a high school rom-com. Its inclusive cast is just as inspiring for older generations as it is for teens. Thinking “What should I watch tonight?” You might want to choose this one.

  • This Netflix film has a flashy landscape of expertly choreographed fight sequences.
  • The movie is inventive, unique, and funny.
  • Really entertaining and at times brilliantly silly.

Even though it’s not one of the new movies streaming, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World deserves to be on this list. A story which takes place partly within the mind, it was inspired by the same titled graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O’Malley.

Protagonist Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) is a 22-year-old Canadian who plays in a garage band that aspires to be famous. As the bass guitarist, he dates a high school girl, Knives Chau, but he hasn’t recovered from being dumped by his previous girlfriend, who has her own successful group.

Eventually, Scott falls for Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead)… but has problems leaving Knives. As if trying to balance two girls wasn’t hard, seven ex-lovers accompany Ramona, and Scott must battle all of them! In a crazy turn of events, he finds himself stuck in a series of resentful matches against super-powered rivals who all once dated the girl of his dreams.

Although it isn’t one of the new movies created in 2021 this deserves to be featured because video games are part of the film’s artistic DNA, along with kung fu movies, anime, and comic books. The content of video games might not be inspiring source material, but the experience of video games is unlike anything else in life.

Pieces of a Woman (2020)
Pieces of a Woman (2020)

Pieces of a Woman is one of those movies that can be described as heavy, struggling, and bewitching, yet subtle

Visit Website
  • The tragic event is followed by a court case against the midwife.
  • The movie explores themes of loss and grief
  • It presents a traumatic childbirth

Pieces of a Woman has an outstanding opening; the audience is introduced to Sean and Martha (Shia LaBeouf and Vanessa Kirby), as they prepare for a home birth. However, their lives change irrevocably when the happiest moment ends tragically. Martha must deal with her grief while working through the relationships with her husband, mother, and midwife, whom she must face in court. It’s a deeply emotional story of a woman learning how to live alongside her loss.

Pieces of a Woman is one of those movies that can be described as heavy, struggling, and bewitching, yet subtle. Even though the movie is slow-paced with dozens of depressing moments, it sheds light on every broken mother who has found herself in a similar situation.

The movie is excellently directed by Kornél Mundrucz. He searches for details and expressions, especially in his characters and their non-verbal language; scenes are emphasized by the music of Howard Shore. Shia LaBeouf’s performance is one of the most solid of his career, while Ellen Burstyn charms and captivates. Vanessa Kirby presents herself as a true actress with a solid interpretation: her character is touching, exciting, and strong, while holding onto heartbreak and pain.

  • Dramatizes a turbulent recording session.
  • Biographical musical drama movie based on the 1982 play by August Wilson.
  • Illustrates a biographical fragment of the short career of Ma Rainey.

Based on August Wilson’s work of the same name. Ma Rainey (Viola Davis) is an influential blues singer and dramatizes a turbulent recording session in 1920’s Chicago. The story centers around the career of the “Mother of the Blues”.

The movie takes place in the middle of the Great Migration, with Ma escaping the racist violence and crushing poverty of the rural South. The majority of the film takes place in Chicago during a 1927 recording session. Ma calls all the shots: Irvin (Jeremy Shamos), her white manager, and his boss Sturdyvant (Johnny Coyne), bend to the wishes of their star client, caving to her artistic choices and smoothing over her legal troubles.

However, there is a huge difference between amusement and understanding, as well as respect and exploitation. Ma says: “They don’t care about me. All they want is my voice,” about her white collaborators, and she is speaking the truth. In reality, Ma’s misbehavior is nothing in comparison to the disrespect they hold for her.

Joining other Netflix originals movies, the project was announced in 2013 as part of his ten-picture deal with HBO. However, the adaptation moved to Netflix eventually, with filming beginning in Pittsburgh in 2019. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom finally began a limited theatrical release in November 2020, before streaming on Netflix on December 18.

  • Thematically, the movie centers on Jesse's change from a boy to a man
  • The film was the ideal epilogue to the series and ends the story of Jesse in a satisfying way
  • Gilligan started considering El Camino’s story while shooting the Breaking Bad final season

Searching for movies to stream this weekend? El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie is an excellent choice. A crime thriller film that serves as a sequel and epilogue to the series Breaking Bad, the film tells the story of Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), who was in partnership with Walter White to become kingpins of an Albuquerque crystal meth empire. The plot centers on the events that follow Breaking Bad‘s finale.

Breaking Bad was always perceived as Walter White’s story. This movie is not designed to exist as a standalone; instead, it’s recommended as something to watch after the end of season 5. Gilligan picks up the story right where he left off, with Pinkman escaping from detention and driving away to freedom. In order to escape the drug life, Pinkman looks for some old friends, shaves his beard, and gets rid of his car, searching for a new life in Alaska.

  • Howard’s life quickly splits into chaos with all the groups he’s a part of

Uncut Gems, which technically falls under a Netflix Original, is directed by Benny and Josh Safdie. Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler) is a once-successful gems dealer whose gambling addiction has left his career in shambles with hundreds of thousands in debt.

Searching for his next big bet, Howard thinks that he has finally struck gold when he discovers a rare uncut rock of Ethiopian gems, with a very interested high-profile buyer. The closer he gets to winning, though, the more he realizes that he cannot keep running from the consequences of his own actions.

A New York jeweler with an irresistible gambling habit, some bad people are on the lookout for Howard, including Arno (Eric Bogosian), his brother-in-law. Howard wants to win big, but instead, he hits rock bottom.

This might be the most stressful movie you have ever seen because it ramps the intensity to a high level, but Sandler’s performance is brilliant. From the first minute until the end, the film doesn’t let up. Howard is a character with so much momentum, power, and chaos. The frenetic energy elevates to another level and infuses every scene, despite being calibrated so generously so that it stays on the right side of frustration.

  • The film is a bust-out-loud comedy at the same time
  • It‘s an inspiration for those who need to believe in themselves
  • The movie presents a touching, bitter, and uplifting true story

Dolemite Is My Name is a 2019 American comedy film; based on a true story, it is directed by Craig Brewer. It’s one of the movies on Netflix in 2021 that should be on your watch list. Rudy Ray Moore (Eddir Murphy) chased success as a dancer, singer, and stand-up comic, and hit it big with his explicit alter ego, Dolemite, in 1970’s Los Angeles.

After many years of hard work as an entertainer, Rudy Ray Moore gathered interesting stories he heard around and created the stand-up comedian character of Dolemite. The act leads him to great success, featuring touring gigs and self-released record albums. At that time, the Blaxploitation film genre was blowing up, so it was just a matter of time until Dolemite hit the big screen. Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander’s script traces key years in Moore’s life in the 70s.

Dolemite is My Name is one of those simple, sweet, and cool movies to watch. Told by a very bawdy man, it is an inspirational story for those who find the details of show business interesting. Murphy plays Dolemite with a full heart, bringing to life the persistent spirit of a man who thought big. He says “I want the world to know I exist,” but not just for himself, but for his under-represented community as well.

Gerald’s Game (2017)
Gerald’s Game (2017)

Based on Stephen King’s 1992 novel, this film is not a typical horror movie with ghosts

Visit Website
  • Explores the division of lies and truth in a marriage
  • Not a typical horror movie
  • Perfectly maintained as a cautious thriller and a horror tale

One of the top movies found on Netflix is Gerald’s Game, a psychological horror film directed by Mike Flanagan. Based on Stephen King’s 1992 novel, this film is not a typical horror movie with ghosts. Well, ghosts may or may not be in the movie, but the horror is not about them. It is one of the scariest movies because of its darkness. Topics such as misogyny and child abuse are explored in the movie, and not everyone can (or wants) to handle that.

In this Netflix film, married couple Jessie (Carla Gugino) and Gerald (Bruce Greenwood) arrive in an isolated house for vacation. However, things get ugly fast. Gerald dies of a sudden heart attack, leaving his wife handcuffed to the bed. Stuck alone in the middle of nowhere, Carla must find a way to survive while fighting her long-buried inner demons.

As time passes and she begins to lose strength, Jessie starts to hallucinate. Believing that she is the reason for her husband’s death, she starts a conversation with not just Gerald, but herself. All of the little parts that she had repressed inside of her come out over the course of the movie.

Gerald’s Game was released in September 2017 and received positive reviews from critics who admired Gugino’s performance. That is only one of the reasons why this film should be on your “Movies to watch in 2021” list.

The Two Popes (2019)
The Two Popes (2019)

If you’re searching for something good to watch, The Two Popes is a brilliant choice

Visit Website
  • Focuses on two periods: the election of Ratzinger, and the subsequent events
  • Pope Francis and Pope Benedict are polar opposites who find common ground
  • Investigates one of the most interesting periods in the papacy

If you’re searching for something good to watch, The Two Popes is a brilliant choice. A biographical drama directed by Fernando Meirelles, the film tells a remarkable story of how two Popes, who are polar opposites, came face-to-face for the first time in 600 years. Pope Benedict holds the traditions of the church closely, while Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, a progressive, earns jeers and praise from watchers.

Behind Vatican walls, the future Pope Francis and the conservative Pope Benedict have to find common ground to make a new path for the Catholic Church.

Even though it isn’t one of the new movies streaming, The Two Popes is highly recommended because it offers a deep examination of faith. Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins deliver excellent performances.

It is ironic that two Welsh actors portray an Argentinian and a German, but the film is mostly in English. The movie gives an insightful look into the human condition and the underpinnings of faith, and was filmed in the Vatican and Argentina.

Meirelles makes the film engaging with a dose of humor and visual techniques which virtually attract the attention of the audience. Editing tricks and shifting camera angles make the conversation in the film more intriguing. The critical reaction to this movie has been favorable so far.

Wondering what to stream next? Try checking out The Hateful Eight (sometimes The H8ful Eight) an American Revisionist Western thriller film directed by Quentin Tarantino. Post-civil war, eight strangers (Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Demián Bichir, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, and Bruce Dern) seek refuge from a blizzard at Minnie’s Haberdashery. As the storm overtakes the mountainside, the travelers start realizing that everything and everyone always needs a second look at.

The Hateful Eight is not one of Tarantino’s new movies to watch, but it’s definitely one of his greatest. There are no heroes in this film. Instead of having one main protagonist, Tarrentino puts together eight terrible people in one room and lights a fire. The film is dynamic and tense; many secrets are discovered, while the claustrophobic situation leads towards a violent climax.

The Hateful Eight features big stars that all have some sort of vendetta. Multiple themes such as race, revenge, and triumph are present, as well as some awesome landscape shots, thanks to the 2.76:1 70mm widescreen.

He has a more important task, though: to protect the broken automation and notebook that his father left for him. In order to fix and use the automation, Hugo must find the key and unlock the secret.

On his adventure, Hugo is accompanied by George Melies (Ben Kingsley), a shopkeeper, who runs an old toy shop. Hugo thinks that they both have a strong connection to his father and the mechanical man, festering the relationship.

Hugo is one of Scorsese’s amazing movies to watch, as he creates an inventive and free-flowing winner that touches the heart with the transformation Hugo brings out in Melies. Starting out as a sharp and cynical man to become humble and grateful, the tie that holds Hugo and Melies together is the mutual gratitude for the automaton and its secrets.

Lady Bird is one of many cool movies to watch

Visit Website
  • It captures the turbulence of a girl growing up
  • It’s an appealing coming-of-age tale that provokes emotions
  • Lady Bird combines tenderness, wisdom, humor and grace

Lady Bird is one of many cool movies to watch. An American comedy-drama film directed by Greta Gerwig, the film presents the coming-of-age story of a high school girl and her tense relationship with her mother, family, and friends. Lady Bird is a tale of stress, anxiety, and a striving for acceptance and perfection. Its themes are common ones with which many young adults can identify during their own high school years.

Lady Bird is obsessed with her place in the world: at her Catholic school, in the school play, in her family, and in her hometown of Sacramento. She desires a sophisticated way of life that she can’t even put into words; beyond an obscure desire to go to college across the country, she is sure that there is more out there for her.

This is one of those good movies to stream because the film shows how one’s environment growing up can have a huge impact on their choices in life. From jumping out of a car, disrupting assemblies at the high school, and battling with love, Lady Bird slides through high school with highs and lows.

The specialness of the film is not in its inventive scenes but in the most clichéd ones. It is most perfectly presented in the relationship between a mother and a daughter, whose characters are treated with empathy and sympathy. The film reminds us of the struggles of adolescence, at the same time giving a great insight into the challenges that parents face, usually in silence.

Vivian (Hadley Robinson), a shy girl who prefers to keep her head down, starts a feminist movement after getting tired of sexist behavior around her. Inspired by her mom and the song “Rebel Girl” by Bikini Kill, Vivian creates a “zine” and delivers it throughout her school, anonymously naming it MOXIE. Her aim to expose bias and wrongdoing at school suddenly sparks a movement. At the peak of the revolution, Vivian begins to create new friendships with other girls and allies, reaching across the divide of cliques and clubs as they learn to navigate the highs and lows of school together.

Moxie is a high school drama that is one of the new movies on Netflix in 2021 to check out. It’s quite predictable, but it deals with a great subject matter and presents a diverse cast of characters that are easy to fall for.

The film was released in March 2021 by Netflix, and reviews from critics were mixed to positive.

  • Every detail of the movie's design is intended for maximum psychic confusion
  • A twisted psychological thriller that keeps you guessing throughout
  • High on atmosphere, in large part due to its visuals

Shutter Island is one of the most popular movies on streaming services. A psychological thriller film directed by Martin Scorsese, it’s based on Dennis Lehane’s 2003 novel.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Edward “Teddy” Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) is in charge of investigating a psychiatric facility on Shutter Island after a patient goes missing. Shutter Island, a remote island off of Boston, was adapted as a prison for the criminally insane after being built for the Civil War.

Assisted by his partner Chuck (Mark Ruffalo), Daniels finds out that the patient disappeared from a locked room, leading to many hints of dreadful deeds committed within the walls of the hospital. As the investigation continues, Daniels realizes that he must confront his own fears if he wants to make it off the island in one piece.

This is one of the good movies to stream partially because of Daniels alone. He’s a prime investigator, yet when the communication with the mainland ends, weird things begin to happen. The characters begin to doubt everything and everyone – their partner, memory, and own mind.

Shutter Island was released on February 19, 2010, and received positive reviews from critics. It was chosen as one of the top 10 films of 2010 by the National Board of Review and is one of Netflix’s high-quality new movies in 2021 as well.

Moving from New Jersey to California because of his mother’s job, Daniel realizes that the West Coast isn’t as welcoming as it seems. Things only get worse when he meets Johnny, the rich leader of a karate group.

Daniel finds support in Mr. Miyagi, the aging handyman with great karate knowledge. Miyagi helps Daniel learn karate techniques and invaluable lessons about life. When Daniel manages to enter the All-Valley Karate Tournament, he seeks to gain the respect that he lacks from others.

The Karate Kid should be on your “Movies to stream” list because it’s uplifting on many levels. Focusing on how a lonely kid triumphs against the odds, the movie does not need any special effects to get its story across. For those who love a blast from the past, The Karate Kid also brings back feelings of nostalgia.

This film is highly recommended to anyone who loves touching and uplifting stories, as well as the 1980’s.

Malcolm & Marie (2021)

  • The film is as cruel as it is appealing
  • A mesmerizing performance that ruminates on life, love, and art
  • Great cast and cinematography

Malcolm & Marie finishes off our top 20 movies found on Netflix in 2021. A black-and-white romantic drama directed by Sam Levinson, Malcolm (John David Washington) and his girlfriend Marie (Zendaya) is pushed to the limit on the night of Malcolm’s film premiere. This project was the first Hollywood feature to be entirely completed since the outbreak of COVID-19.

When this couple in Hollywood returns home from Malcolm’s latest film premiere, the evening takes a turn as painful revelations about their relationship surface, testing the power and strength of their love.

At first glance, Sam Levinson’s new film seems like a story about love and how a romantic relationship can be emotionally straining. Instead, the movie uses its characters as vessels to provide Levinson’s criticism of white guilt in the film industry. Through the roles of Malcolm and Marie, Levinson asks whether or not films need to have an underlying social or political message to leave an impression.

John David Washinton and Zendaya give terrific performances and speak deeply resonating dialogue. The set is an elegant single-setting production, and the film compels the audience to see beyond a couple yelling across the house and acknowledge more. The black and white cinematography and crystalline high-contrast are gorgeous enough to convert a domestic conflict into something marvelously cinematic.
