Starring Cillian Murphy (from the more recent TV series Peaky Blinders) as Jim, Naomie Harris as Selena, and Noah Huntley as Mark, this unusual zombie apocalypse creates a sense of foreboding and intrigue. The plot revolves around the epidemic virus that induces rage, thereby causing massive destruction of society. The virus is set loose when animal rights activists release chimpanzees that were subjected to experimentation. Jim, a bike courier who wakes up from a coma, finds himself in the spooky, seemingly depopulated London. He meets Selene and Mark, and the trio struggles to navigate the harsh zombie-inflicted environment.

What sets this movie apart from other good horror movies on Hulu is its eerie relevance to our COVID-19 reality. Boyle intended to depict the so-called “social rage,” or the aggressive intolerance of fellow citizens. COVID-19 doesn’t provoke aggression but rather violent protests because of the epidemiological measures.

Unlike most contemporary horror movies, this one is shot with a digital camera, which will leave the aesthetes among you dissatisfied. Nonetheless, in our view, the greater problem is that the movie loses sight of its path. Although Boyle is famous for his socio-political masterpiece of pop culture Trainspotting, his zombie flick is, when all is said and done, a mere instance of a zombie subgenre.

What to watch on Hulu right now? Stream Cronenberg’s Possessor – a must-watch for anyone into body horror and thrillers since this masterpiece is at the intersection of the genres. Riseborough’s Tasya Vos is a corporate assassin that can literally possess your body by using brain-implant technology. Then nightmares begin. She can make you kill anyone who is a proclaimed enemy of the corporation. Afterward, she will make you kill yourself. Nonetheless, when Tasya links to Abbot’s Colin, their neural and physical paths lock them together into a hell of intertwined identities.

Hulu horror movies usually have no philosophical layers, but this one is a true mind teaser. What makes you who you are? What are the boundaries of the self? Does the body make you unique or your memories? These are all the questions that drive Cronenberg’s movie and make it stand out among other body horrors. In other words, the film offers more than an intricate link between violence and sanity.

However, Brandon Cronenberg still has a hard time escaping his father’s shadow. It seems like he is only rehearsing David Cronenberg’s style, albeit with more intellectual substance (which shouldn’t be surprising since Brandon Cronenberg has always described himself as a book nerd). Of course, this doesn’t mean that it’s not one of the scariest movies on Hulu; it’s just that we expect more of Cronenberg Junior in years to come.

Scary movies can be weird as well; just take a look at Bad Hair. Justin Simien set his film in the late 1980s during the rise of swingbeat. Anna (Elle Lorraine) is an ambitious assistant working for a television station and aspiring to become a VJ. Her new boss, a former model Zora (Vanessa Wiliams), insists that Anna changes her Afro-textured hair to a weave in order to boost her career. Nonetheless, Anna’s killer new look proves to be literally killing. Anna realizes the dark lurking similarity between African American slave lore tale The Moss Haired Girl and things happening to her and looks for ways to get rid of the weave.

This good movie on Hulu has an outstanding cast. It is the first horror that can brag about having an all-black cast, with many celebrities taking part. Thus, Kelly Rowland and Usher offer stellar performances, albeit way too short to be meaningful for the plot. This fantastic duo appeared together on the screen a long time ago – in the 1999 drama Light It Up.

Simien’s horror amounts to a satire of the 1980s, and it’s delightful to see to what extent he pursued aesthetical accuracy when depicting that period. In terms of fashion, soundtrack, and mise-en-scène, Bad Hair is a feast for the eyes. It will also make you chuckle. However, the reasons for laughter may be unintended ones. Although Simien returns to his socially conscientious messages throughout the movie, he is criticized for heavily misunderstanding women of color.

Roxanne Benjamin and her colleagues have tried to make a horror that mixes classic Jim Jarmusch with the road movie genre. Two men (Villella and Bettinelli-Olpin) on the run from mysterious floating creatures, an all-female rock band, a man trying to get back home, a brother looking for a sister, and a family on vacation meet in the middle of nowhere. Their dark secrets reveal their true selves and link them all together in a night of terror.

True horror connoisseurs will find everything they are used to, namely, serial killers, Satanic and demonic presence, gore, blood, and tears. However, the movie has a more artistic vibe than one would expect from such a flick, and it is arguably among the top scary movies. Characters are not merely massacred but also tortured in a sophisticated way, similar to punishments meted out by the gods in Greek mythology. This is why we had an impression that the movie is actually set in hell, where every character is being tried for their sins. All of them are tuned to a peculiar radio, so we can hear a DJ suggesting that they all deserve what is happening to them.

Horror anthologies are usually risky since they come across as a mixed bag of vignettes of fluctuating quality. Southbound doesn’t manage to escape that destiny either.

Stockholm, Sweden, the year is 1982. It snows heavily on the outside. A creepy 12-year old is hanging out on the playground, wearing only a light sweater. When she asks you to let her in, would you do it? Alfredson’s modern-day gothic fable about friendship (and romance) between a sensitive, bullied boy and a vampire is one of the best horror movies on Hulu. The movie isn’t focused solely on Oskar’s (Hedebrant) and Eli’s (Leandersson) growing relationship but develops side characters as well. Eli lives with Håkan (Per Ragnar), who procures her with fresh blood so that she doesn’t have to engage in killing. Via Håkan’s actions, the parallel story unravels with a group of young people who either get massacred or turned into vampires. The quality of the screenplay is primarily due to the eponymous book, which is why the story is way more complex and carefully written than it is usually the case with horrors.

This Nordic masterpiece represents the best of Hulu due to its chilling subtleties. Thus, the winter scenery of suburban Stockholm goes hand-in-hand with Eli’s gaze. Additionally, as she and Oskar become closer, the violence in the movie escalates. The greatest sign of devotion was, at the same time, the greatest bloodbath.

The American adaptation of the book was released two years later with the working title Let Me In. Nonetheless, the critics were mainly disappointed with this shallow version as opposed to Alfredson’s macabre and fastidious nightmare-worthy film. Our take is that the superiority of the Swedish version lies in representing the emotional delicacy of the relationship between the two outcasts.

It’s not a coincidence that the best Hulu horror movies are usually Korean. Joon-Ho’s spooky flick is an example of this trend. Set in Seoul, the film revolves around the terrifying creature that inhabits the Han River and assaults people. Such a monstrous creature originated from a human mistake: apparently, an American military pathologist had thrown biohazardous waste down the drain. An average Korean family never imagined getting immersed in the horrid situation of having a family member, Hyun-Seo (Go Ah-Sung), captured by a monster. Although the family believes she is dead, Hyun-Seo calls them and explains that she is trapped in the sewers. And so, the whole family begins looking for her, but instead of saving Hyun-Seo, they end up losing themselves.

The surprising tenderness of this movie stems from familial ties. The misunderstandings between parents and offspring and sibling rivalry are common themes. However, what spoils a seemingly serene family life in this depiction of the supernatural on Hulu is a creepy lizard who eats people. Reminiscent of the monsters-and-mutants flicks of the 1960s, The Host is exotic only inasmuch as it is focused on the Korean culture, scarcely known in the West.

Unfortunately, though, the movie falls prey to comparisons with Godzilla. Our verdict is that Bong Joon-Ho has done a fantastic job of navigating between different and opposing genres – from almost sitcom-worthy situations through family drama to nightmare fuel. That said, it should also be noted that the movie has failings of its own. Thus, the subliminal political context seems utterly uncalled-for.

This is one of the rare horror movies on Hulu that have been first pitched at film festivals. Polish filmmaker Szumowska has made a brilliant movie that extends beyond the genre by critically assessing cults both internally and externally. In a nutshell, Cassidy plays Selah, a girl coming of age, brought up in a bizarre all-women cult led by Huisman’s Shepherd. Szumowska only hints that the girls in the cult, classified into wives and daughters, are, in fact, biological daughters of the cult leader, but this is enough to send chills down your spine. Selah begins to question the world she belongs to due to mysterious visions. This results in rejecting the patriarchal and abusive system (albeit with dire consequences).

However, what makes this film one of the best horror movies on Hulu is the clever metaphor of the oppressive and misogynistic political regimes that lurks behind the Shepherd’s cult. It seems that each cult mirrors such regimes on a smaller scale. Being released at the time of the #MeToo movement, this is undoubtedly one of the spookiest films because it confronts us with gruesome aspects of our own reality.

Unlike the more popular Midsommar – a thriller also focused on cults – Szumowska’s horror is also enriched with beautiful cinematic photography. Although Midsommar scored higher in both ratings and box office success, The Other Lamb is more thought-provoking.

Wondering what are the best movies to stream on Christmas Eve? Jalmari Helander’s spooky anti-Santa Claus flick will make you see the holiday customs with fresh eyes. Christmas will probably be ruined for you, but it will be worth it. Nonetheless, if you belong to the Bah, humbug! kind, then you’re in for a treat. Two boys (Onni Tommila and Ilmari Järvenpää) who live in a small town on the Finnish-Russian border witness an archeological dig of Santa Claus’s tomb. Then a series of dreadful events unravel, such as the kidnapping of children and butchering of reindeer. When the father of one of the boys (Jorma Tommila) captures an old man in a wolf trap, the nightmares get unleashed.

Not many good scary movies exploit folklore and mythology in such an enlightened manner. The recent popularity of the legend of Krampus – the demonic and evil version of St. Nicholas who punishes badly behaved children – is approached from two fronts. On the one hand, Helander tackles the origins of the legend from the Finnish cultural perspective. On the other hand, he also reevaluates the reception of myths in contemporary society.

What goes wrong, however, is the execution of a well-thought-out idea. The acting is not dynamic enough and lacks emotional expression when there is a clear need for it. Besides, the kid-friendly aesthetics are misleading since it’s definitely not a movie for children.

It’s common knowledge that the best horror movies are Stephen King’s stories and novels adapted for the big screen. Thus, Fritz Kiersch provided us with an adaptation of King’s novel that deals with the mysterious pagan rituals of the pre-teen and teen zealots. Imagine yourself driving through the middle of nowhere, and you accidentally hit a sick child. Next thing you know, creepy kids surround you, and, well, the rest is not for the faint-hearted. This is precisely what happened to Horton’s Bert and Hamilton’s Vicky while driving through Gatlin, Nebraska. There, they had the misfortune of encountering Franklin’s Isaac, a cult leader who resides in the cornfields and believes that everyone over 18 should be slaughtered to ensure a successful harvest. Isaac and the rest of the children are loyal and pray to the demonic presence dubbed “He Who Walks Behind the Rows.”

Being one of the classic horror movies on Hulu, Children of the Corn spawned more remakes, prequels, and sequels than any other of King’s writings. The main merit of the movie lies in sketching the consequences of religious fanaticism that rears its ugly head from time to time in rural America. It can warn parents how their belief systems can be distorted by children if they fail to develop open-mindedness in their offspring.

However, the classic hasn’t really resonated with the audience. We really get that – budgetary constraints are obvious, computer-generated special effects are nowadays quite cringey, and the slow pace kinda ruins the whole chilling action horror vibe.

What are the best horror movies on Hulu? In many cases, it’s the Korean ones. Yeon Sang-ho’s Train to Busan is a true meld of genres: zombie apocalypse meets family drama on the railroad from Seoul to Busan. Seok-Woo (Gong Yoo), a busy investment manager who never had the opportunity to get close to his daughter Soo-An (Su-An Kim), travels with her on a train so that she could visit her mother. However, a virus spreads on the KTX high-speed train, and everyone infected becomes a zombie. The train ride becomes a hellish bid for survival if they manage to escape both the zombies and the selfish humans.

What clearly distinguishes the top horror movies on Hulu from the mediocre ones are the sociopolitical messages conveyed. In the case of the Train to Busan, there’s an undercurrent of thoughtful criticism of the capitalistic society. The worst zombie virus is the lack of empathy and understanding for other human beings due to the striving for profit. Thus, Seok-Woo realizes that survival is possible only when people help each other. This is a lesson he clearly missed in the pre-zombie outbreak times when he referred to his employees as lemmings.

Unlike more nuanced masterpieces such as 28 Days Later, Yeon Sang-ho’s film doesn’t escape generic tropes, illogical turns of events, and plot inconsistencies. Besides, two hours of constant zombie hysteria is too long, even for aficionados.

You probably wouldn’t expect that the Austrian horror would be among the best horror movies on Hulu now, but that’s because you never heard of Goodnight Mommy. Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala have created a spooky and disturbing twin horror that will scare the shit out of you. Lukas and Elias, played by real-life (and eponymous) twins, meet their mom (Susanne Wuest) after she returns from the hospital. The only issue is that their mom seems different – not because of the bandages which cover her face, but due to her strange behavior. She ignores Lukas, acknowledging only Elias’s presence, and she is downright abusive. Lukas and Elias begin torturing the woman to prove she isn’t their mother at all. However, the denouement is striking: the violence sheds light on severe psychological trauma and a medical condition.

Normally, scary movies on Hulu don’t roam the no man’s land of trauma and mental disorders since this is the realm of thrillers rather than horror movies that usually focus on the paranormal. Nonetheless, the filmmaking duo Franz and Fiala had an easy job of making a patchwork out of the twins’ extraordinarily played roles. Lukas and Elias Schwartz were chosen among 240 pairs of identical twins. They didn’t have any previous experience with the movie industry, which makes their performance all the more impressive.

Good acting, however, cannot make up for all the directors’ miscalculations. The movie is much longer than it is actually needed to tell the story. Also, the big and shocking climax typical for scary movies isn’t that shocking at all. The viewer can easily deduce what the big revelation will be somewhere in the middle of the film, rendering the whole watching experience pretty futile.

Kim Jee-Woon’s revenge flick is undoubtedly one of the top scary movies of the 21st century. Trust us; we are not exaggerating. The story unfolds when a deranged serial killer (Choi Min-Sik) kidnaps the lonely woman waiting for a tow truck. The following day, her head is found in the river, leaving her fiancé – a secret agent Kim Soo-Hyeon (Lee Byung-Hun) broken and thirsty for vengeance. The brutal game of cat-and-mouse begins as Kim Soo-Hyeon hunts and releases the serial killer because he wants to make him suffer as much as possible. Throughout the next two hours, you will witness cannibalism, torture, rape, sadism, and lots of bloodshed – as it should be with best horror movies.

The main virtue of the movie is the surprising message about our morality that lurks behind all that gruesome violence. As Kim Soo-Hyeon goes further and further with his vengeance, not only does he begin to realize the true nature of evil, but he gets immersed in it. In other words, by trying to get even with the devil incarnate, Soo-Hyeon becomes a monster as well. This can be taken to show how human morality has evolved from tribalistic vendettas to more forgiving and legally regulated customs. Thus, when one decides to take justice into one’s own hands, the result is inevitably morally wrong because we should and do know better.

Jee-Woon’s I Saw the Devil is certainly not among the underrated horror movies. On the contrary, it may come across as a bit overrated. Although the extent and the depiction of violence are both impressive, it will leave you indifferent in due course. Besides, the script is essentially not inspiring at all; it’s just Jee-Woon’s talent that manages to make the movie worth your time.

A melodrama and adultery thriller that is at the same time one of the horror movies on Hulu, Sang-soo Im’s remake of the 1960s classic has all that you need. The film centers around an upper-class Korean family who hire a housemaid (Jeon Do-Yeon) to look after a child. However, when the master of the house (Jung-Jae Lee) seduces her, the other three females – his wife, mother-in-law, and housekeeper, begin plotting. When the housemaid learns that she is pregnant, the three ladies eventually force her into an abortion, leading to a dire and bloody outcome.

The movie can be understood in terms of the prevailing class inequality in contemporary Korean society. In the final scene, when the housemaid goes berserker due to constant threats, abuse, and hatred, we can see Im’s worries that the Korean society could be on the brink of a severe crisis.

Even though this is undoubtedly one of the good movies on Hulu, the characters are represented pretty shallowly. Almost every situation is black-and-white, and characters’ actions are hence predictable. Most critics were displeased with this remake, stating that the original is way more sophisticated.

When choosing between the scariest movies on Hulu, be sure to consider The Lodge. This survival horror by the dynamic Austrian duo, Franz and Fiala, hit us like a snowball on a hot summer day. It was refreshing at first, but then we just got uncomfortable. But that’s just us. In any case, the movie revolves around Grace (Riley Keough). She gets snowed in with her boyfriend’s children (Jaeden Martell and Lia McHugh) in a winter cabin during the Christmas holidays. Inner demons, bizarre dreams, and unhealed past hunt all three of them, which results in Grace losing her mind.

The movie is among the best scary movies when it comes to the aesthetics and stylistic choices of the directors. Winter charm, Catholic iconography, and a cozy winter cabin are all a part of the mix which will gradually make you feel claustrophobic. Besides, Riley Keough brings about one of the best performances of lunacy on the big screen ever since Bergman’s Cries and Whispers (1972).

Where the film falls short is plot consistency. A bunch of illogical decisions muddy the essentially stagnant storyline. Thus, it is hard to find reasons to continue with the streaming except to watch Keough’s Grace.

Neasa Hardiman’s Sea Fever is often ranked among the best new horror movies, and justifiably so. It is a clever hybrid of genres ranging from sci-fi through classic monster horror to pandemic thriller and environmental drama. Hermione Corfield plays Siobhan, a Ph.D. student in marine biology traveling on a fishing trawler with a six-people crew. When sailing through the exclusion zone, their trawler gets stuck in the blue-green slime. It turns out that a terrifying creature holds onto the boat. The nightmares are yet to begin when they discover that parasitic larvae emerging from the slime are contagious and burst out of one’s eyes after contamination. The only person who has a faint idea of how to remain alive is Siobhan.

Good scary movies don’t usually come with a heavy load of social, political, and even environmental messages. However, Hardiman’s film proved to be highly relevant in COVID-19 struck 2020. Siobhan’s advice that the rest of the crew should isolate themselves to see who is sick to save people from the virus outbreak especially resonates with all of us.

Some of the environmental metaphors are not exploited or developed to meet their full potential. Hardiman is undoubtedly a skilled director whose best works are probably yet to come. That said, Sea Fever is driven by a great idea while the execution falls short of the director’s ambitions. Furthermore, this good movie on Hulu lacks the usual visceral thrills.
